The R.O.L.E.S. members have already been extremely busy this first month of school.  We have many projects underway and all are ready to help the community.  One of the main ongoing projects at Roosevelt is

"TRASH TO TREASURE" -

Erie School District's Recycling Program

"Trash to Treasure" gives students a chance to recycle numerous items, which are used everyday at school.  Some of these items include newspapers, magazines, cans, plastic bottles, ink cartridges. This program was started by the Erie School District to get students involved in the process of recycling.  Students find out if we recycle these items, we can make some extra money for our school, but most of all save our environment.

R.O.L.E.S. focuses on 5 items which can and are being recycled.

1) Faculty and Staff recycle printer ink cartridges.  The ink cartridges are sent to a recycling center in Tennessee or California.  In return to sending the cartridges R.O.L.E.S. receives a payment for some of the cartridges sent.  If your school is interested in learning more about recycling printer cartridges, go to  Enviro Solutions' Printer Cartridge Recycling Programs on the web.

2) Everyday teachers receive several unwanted teacher magazines.  We have put a box in the office for teachers to throw these unwanted magazines.  Two students every Thursday bundle and tie them up.

3) In the cafeteria, Ms. Jarema has monitors who remind students to throw their plastic bottles and cans in the proper container.

4) The faculty and staff bring newspapers from home and/ or  stack them up in his or her class.  Two of our members come every Wednesday and Thursday to bundle and tie the newspapers.  This has been a huge success, because of the Newspapers in Education.

5) Everyday tons of used paper is thrown away in the school, several teachers near Mr. Viglione put this used paper in green bins to put be out without any contamination.

Some time teachers run out of time to correct all of those papers or clean that desk.  R.O.L.E.S. members participate in a Teacher/Student Co-op.  This student co-op helps a teacher with cleaning his or her room, grading papers or entering those grades into the computer.  NO ONE WANTS A DESK. LIKE THE ONE ABOVE!!  Get a STUDENT CO-OP! Mrs. Mooney has introduced Earth Force to the R.O.L.E.S. members; at least 8 students are interested and have gotten involved with the program.
