East High School Learn and Serve
2003-2004

East students have an exclusive partnership with Mercyhurst College. Together, we are helping the students of our elementary schools to achieve higher scores on PSSA and to overcome language barriers. The Mercyhurst Bridge Program offers at least 20 East students the opportunity, twice a week to work along side college students and provides Edison elementary students a chance to improve on reading and math skills.

East is also active in community charities.  Many teachers and students join together to help local charities with donations and volunteer hours. Some of the past charities East has helped are: Second Harvest Food, March of Dimes, American Cancer Association, American Leukemia Association, Shriners Children Hospital, Caring Closet, SafeNet, The Refuge, Special Olympics and the Mercy Center.

East high school has actively supported our troops overseas.  East's own teachers have served or are currently serving in the Middle East conflict.  The Learn and Serve advisor and history teacher, John Boyko is currently serving in Kosovo for the United States Army.  Many of our students have written or have sent care packages to him and his colleagues.

East this year as started a Service Sorority in which a group of East High girls have to maintain a good GPA and commit themselves to at least 36 community hours of service.  Under the guidance of East English teacher, Suzette Lariccia, the sorority plans on volunteering with long term care facilities and become involved with women charities such as: SafeNet, Rape Crisis and Breast Cancer Awareness Walks.

The ROTC program has always been an excellent organization for community service.  This year is no exception.  Under Sergeant Julian and Major Brock, the students have participated in various walks, fundraisers, community volunteering and service.  Look for our cadets in the local Veterans and Memorial Day parades.  These young men and women are a great source of pride for East High.

East Robotics has been active in community fund raising.  The club has gone above and beyond the call for recognition. Under the leadership of technology teacher, Robert McDowell, the club as traveled around the U.S. competing in robotic competitions.  The students are now making and selling Holiday wreaths, swags and poinsettia plants to help fund their competitions and material.

Academic Sports League is another of our clubs that participate in community service.  ASL teacher, Heather Kensill, has pushed for community service with her ASL team.  The students in the past have volunteered for walks, food drives and our own Caring Closet.  The students have also volunteered for various tutoring programs around the school and in the district.
