American General Scholarships:

Sponsored by the American General Career Distribution Group, this scholarship was established to recognize high school seniors who demonstrate the positive character traits of kindness, respect and good citizenship.  Students must present evidence of good character by participating in extracurricular activities at school, be involved in community affairs, and have some sort of after school employment.  For an application, write to the following address:

Angel Awards to Honor Children for Community Service:
Georgia-Pacific, maker of Angel Soft bath tissue, is providing support for the third annual Angels in Action Awards Program.  The program is designed to reward children and youth who perform exemplary acts of service to benefit a community, charity, or cause.  Ten "Angels" between the ages of 8 and 15 (as of June 22, 2002) will be selected to receive the $5,000 awards.  Legal residents of the 50 United States and the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, 18 years or older may submit nominations.  Entries will be judged on the nominee's dedication to his or her community, charity, or cause.  Nominees must be U.S. residents.  For complete guidelines and nomination forms, see the Georgia-Pacific Web site:

Bonner Scholars Program:
The Bonner Foundation supports students at 25 colleges in 12 states with scholarships.  In return, award recipients are asked to serve their communities with 10 hours of service per week and 240 hours during at least one summer.  Students can receive up to $4000 per year for four years.  For more information, visit www.bonner.org

The James Beard Foundation Scholarship Program:
This scholarship provides qualified high school students or graduates interested in pursuing culinary goals several types of scholarships. Types of scholarships can amount to full tuition, specific monetary amounts or tuition for a specific program. Upon award of the scholarships, the school and the recipient are notified. No moneys are awarded directly to the recipients. Information for this scholarship is available on the James Beard Foundation web site at http://www.jamesbeard.org .


The Charles and Louis Lincoln Scholarship at East High School:
Charles and Louis Lincoln graduated from East High School in 1924 as first generation Americans. In 1999 Charles Lincoln’s son, Gary Lincoln, wanted to honor his father and uncle, who were twins, with a generous foundation gift of $50,000. The interest is used toward scholarships for East High School students with financial need, possibly first or second generation Americans. This donation was made because the Lincoln family felt very strongly about public schools in urban settings. CRITERIA/Please read carefully: Student of East High School, Financial Need, Scholastic Ability and Acceptance to Higher Education (may be defined as college, university, technical school, an accredited school beyond high school), First or Second Generation American, Essay Submission, “Why I Deserve the Charles and Louis Lincoln Scholarship,” 350-500 words, sent to the senior guidance counselor at East High School on or before April 1, along with a copy of the student's transcript and letter of acceptance to an institution of higher education.


The Congressional Award:
The Congressional Award rewards students who set goals in four areas: volunteer public service, personal development, physical fitness, and expedition/exploration.  To receive a certificate of recognition, students must complete at least 30 hours of volunteer service, 15 hours of personal development, 15 hours of physical fitness, and a one-day expedition/exploration activity.  To receive a medal of recognition, students must complete at least 100 hours of volunteer service, 50 hours of personal development, 50 hours of physical fitness, and an overnight expedition/exploration activity.  For more information, visit www.congressionalaward.org.


Discover Card Tribute Award Scholarship Program:
The Tribute Award Program presents nine scholarship awards per state of $2500 each and nine awards nationally of $25,000 each to students who demonstrate accomplishments in three of the four following areas: community service, special talents, leadership, and obstacles overcome.  The scholarships are available to high school juniors.  For more information, visit http://charityguide.org/charity /scholarships.htm.


Eli Wiesel Prize In Ethics Essay Contest:
This competition challenges college students to analyze urgent ethical issues and write thought provoking, personal essays.  A total of $10,000 in prizes are awarded annually.  For more information, visit www.eliewieselfoundation.org.

Erie School District Service Learning Scholarship Award:

The Erie School District Student Service Learning Scholarship is awarded yearly to Erie School District seniors who have demonstrated outstanding leadership in community service. The scholarship award of $250 is available to one senior per year per high school. Applications are available in .pdf format using Adobe Acrobat Reader here. Gloria Barron Prize:
The Gloria Baron Prize for Young Heroes honors young people from diverse backgrounds who have shown extraordinary leadership in making our world better.  By helping people, protecting the environment, halting violence, or leading other important service work, young people are true heroes and inspirations to all.  The Barron Prize relies on thoughtful adults to identify and nominate children (no older than eighteen years of age) from the diverse communities in which they live.  The prize accepts nominations on an annual basis and distributes $2,000 awards every fall.  To nominate a young person, the adult nominator must submit a fully completed nomination packet received by May 31.  For more information, visit:  www.barronprize.org  .


Guardian Life Insurance - Girls Going Places College Scholarship Program:
This annual initiative designed to help women create, invest and protect wealth by rewarding the enterprising spirits of girls ages 12-16 has been announced for 2002-03.  College scholarships will be awarded to 15 girls who demonstrate budding entrepreneurship; are taking the first steps toward financial independence; and make a difference in their school and communities.  Three top scholarship prizes of $10,000, $5,000 and $3,000 and 12 finalist prizes of $1,000 will be awarded.  Nomination period for the Girls Going Places Scholarship Program begins September 1, 2002 and ends February 28, 2003.  More information can be found at: http://www.glic.com/wc/frameset.html


Kohl's Kids Who Care:
Individuals (21 years and older) are invited to nominate a student in their community between the ages of 6-18, who have not yet graduated from high school as of March 15, 2002.  The student's actions need to be described in detail and must exemplify efforts that are above and beyond what is normally expected.  Nominations should describe how the nominee has contributed to the community in an extra special way by performing volunteer services that helped non-family members and resulted in positive outcomes.  The volunteer activity should   have occurred within the last 12 months.  (Qualities demonstrated by the child such as initiative, creativity, leadership and generosity will be given equal weight when nomination forms are judged.)

Nomination forms will be separated into two age groups:  ages 6 to 12 and ages 13 to 18, still in high school.  One nominee from each age group will be selected as a Store Level winner in each Kohl's Store.  Seventy-six $1,000 Regional Scholarships will be awarded, 38 from each age group.  Ten $5,000 National Scholarships will be awarded, five from each age group.  Completed nomination forms, which are available at each Kohl's store and on Kohl's Web site at www.kohls.com, must be submitted by March 15, 2002, and signed by a nominator who is age 21 or older.




Louis J. Tullio Memorial Scholarship:


           A $1,000.00 college scholarship will be awarded to a public housing or Section 8 resident for the 2005-2006 school year.  This scholarship
           is paid directly to the student and not to the school.  The scholarship application must be received at the Housing Authority Office, 606
           Holland Street, Erie, PA, 16501-1285, by 4:30 p.m. on Friday, May 27, 2005.




The Phillips Foundation Future Leaders Scholarships:
Two renewable $10,000 scholarships are awarded to college undergraduates who demonstrate leadership on behalf of the cause of freedom, American values, and constitutional principles. For more information, visit www.thephillipsfoundation.org/futureleaders.htm.

Presidential Freedom Scholarships:
Presidential Freedom Scholarships of 1,000 will be awarded to juniors and seniors who are recognized by school officials for their exceptional commitment to responsible citizenship through service to their community. To qualify for the scholarship, students must have served at least 100 hours over the past 12 months and must also submit a brief essay on the meaning and significance of their service in light of the events of September11, 2001. In addition to the scholarships, students receive an award certificate, letter of recognition, and President's Student Service Award gold pin. The new scholarship program updates the President's Student Service Scholarships, which have been awarded to more than 20,000 students since 1997. The program continues to be administered by the Corporation for National and Community Service through its Learn and Serve America program. The Corporation, a federal agency, engages more than 2 million Americans of all ages and backgrounds in service to their country and their fellow citizens. President's Student Service:
All full time students from kindergarten through college who contribute at least 100 hours of service to the community in a 12 month period are eligible for the President's Student Service Award. Students may be certified by school, colleges, or community organizations and will receive a specially designed gold pin with the presidential seal, a presidential certificate, and a letter from the President certificate, and a letter from the President. Youth ages 5 to 14 who perform 50 hours of community service within a 12 month period may receive a silver pin with the presidential seal, as well as a presidential certificate and a letter from the President. The 2002 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards for Middle Level and High School Youth Volunteers
The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards were created in 1995 to recognize students in middle and high school grades who have demonstrated exemplary community service.  These prestigious awards, sponsored by The Prudential Insurance Company of America in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), are presented annually on the local, state and national level.

Rehab Options USA:

State Farm National Merit Achievement Scholarship:
The State Farm Companies foundation sponsors 20 Achievement Scholarships annually.  The scholarships are awarded to African-American high school seniors based on PSAT/NMSQT scores, academic distinction, personal achievement, and leadership abilities.  For more information, visit www.statefarm.com/foundati/awards.htm.


Target All-Around Scholarship:

Youth Action Awards:
Youth Service America and the Nike Foundation are proud to present the Youth Action Awards to help young people see- and act on- the connection between their community service and the larger public policy implications and solutions. Ten Youth Action Awards of $500 each will be awarded in June 2002 to youth or youth organizations to implement continuing advocacy/action plans based on their National Youth Service Day 2002 project. Only by getting involved in the policy making process can youth volunteers be sure that they are not cleaning the same polluted river or teaching in the same under-funded schools year after year. Youth Leaders for Literacy:
A program of the National Education Association and Youth Service America, Youth Leaders for Literacy is an initiative to help youth direct their enthusiasm and creativity into reading related service projects. Prizes will be awarded to youth Leaders and groups who develop model literacy projects. The initiative also seeks to have groups recruit volunteers by posting ongoing opportunities to read to younger children on the new NEA Get Involved! Twenty-five Youth Leaders for Literacy projects will be recognized with a grant of $200.00 each for the project. The top five projects will also be recognized with $200.00 each and a collection of children's books. After you've decided on a literacy project, print out the Official Application (Adobe Acrobat PDF format), fill it out ( be sure to have and adult sponsor sign the consent form), and mail it to the following address.
