Who we are....
John C. Diehl Elementary School is a neighborhood public
elementary school located in Erie, Pennsylvania. We currently have 450
students in grades Kindergarten through Grade Eight.
We are a Core Knowledge School
that teaches a specific sequence of content in each grade level. The Core
Knowledge content is a rigorous, and comprehensive curriculum of
classic subjects including World History, Geography, American History,
Science, Literature, Writing, Mathematics, Visual Arts and Music.
The children and families in our school community are
a diverse cross section of many different cultures, ethnic groups and languages.
Sixty-five percent of our students are minority. Forty-seven percent are
African American, 34% are Caucasian, 14% are Hispanic, and 4% are of other
ethnic groups. John C. Diehl Elementary School has an English as a Second Language
Program. We educate children from 17 different countries, who speak 14
different languages. The students speak Bosnian, Vietnamese, Spanish, Arabic, Albanian, Russian, Ukrainian, Sudanese,
Turkish, Somalian, Swahili, Khron, Romanian, and Maay-Maay.
John C. Diehl Elementary School has nineteen dedicated
and experienced classroom teachers, four special education teachers, and four Title 1 teachers who provide special help in Reading and Math.
We also have two ESL teachers who provide instruction for our English Language
learners. In addition
we have a guidance counselor and a speech therapist. We are an inclusive
school, which means that we accommodate children's special needs within
the regular classroom and curriculum in addition to providing small group,
direct instruction.
