Medical Department Health Care Procedures
On the following pages, routine and emergency health care procedures are outlined to inform teachers of the various procedures carried out by the medical/health care specialists and the teacher's relation to these procedures.
The overall purpose of school health services is to help assure that students are as healthy as possible so that they can learn to the best of their ability.
The school nurse's role is that of a licensed health professional and certified school professional who is an integral part of the pupil services team which provides supportive services to help children and youth in developing their full potential. The nurse's contribution lies in her ability to relate her knowledge of health to the educational process and to conditions which affect learning.
Among other services, school nurses maintain student health records, perform State-required health screening (See Appendix), administer doctor-prescribed medication, respond to school illness or accidents, assist physicians and dentists with school examinations provide health counseling and referral and may act as classroom resources. The nurse serves as a liaison between the school and the home and the physician and community agencies regarding health problems.
Children are excluded from school for the following common diseases or conditions. They may return as indicated.
CHICKEN POX - Excluded for six (6) days after the last outbreak of "pox".
CONJUNCTIVITIS (PINK EYE) - Excluded for 24 hours after prescribed treatment has begun or
condition judged non-infective by physician.
HEAD LICE - Student must be treated with medicated shampoo and be free from nits before being
readmitted. Periodic hair and scalp examinations are conducted in school.
IMPETIGO/RINGWORM - Excluded until prescribed treatment has begun or condition judged non-infective
by physician.
SCARLET FEVER AND OTHER STREP RESPIRATORY INFECTIONS - Excluded for seven (7) days
from onset or for 24 hours after treatment has begun.
